Update: Girl in stable condition after boy stabs her at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek
WALNUT CREEK -- A ninth-grade girl stabbed by a ninth-grade boy at Walnut Creek's Northgate High School on Tuesday was in stable condition at a hospital Wednesday morning, according to Walnut Creek police.
Mt Diablo Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Adam Clark said the girl underwent surgery for her wounds overnight.
"The victim has had successful surgery and is resting in the hospital," Clark said. "I'm very pleased to hear that."
Clark told reporters he could not release any additional details of the stabbing, which has left the student body shaken.
"I feel uneasy knowing that there are people walking around with knives in their pockets that obviously you don't know of," said fellow student Marina Ongnian of the suspect.
"I think it's a wakeup call for the administration to get it together and try to come up with some new protocols," her sister, Julia, said.
The boy was arrested at the scene and was still in custody, police said.
The Mount Diablo Unified School District said the stabbing occurred around 1 p.m. Tuesday at the high school on Castle Rock Road.
Police arrested the boy on suspicion of attempted murder and mayhem and took him to juvenile hall, where he is being held without bail. The school district said the two students were acquaintances.
Authorities aren't naming the suspect because he is a juvenile.
Clark said there would be seven counselors, a social worker and three therapy dogs on the Northgate campus on Wednesday.
