According to police, the pickup was going eastbound on Camden when it t-boned the SUV, which was traveling southbound on Leigh. It is unclear who had the right of way.
The force of the impact spun the pickup around, where it ended up on the sidewalk in front of a Chase Bank. Police said the pickup driver was thrown from his truck and died at the scene.
The SUV ended up even further away from the intersection, on a grassy knoll.
"It would appear that they were going pretty fast just judging from the debris pattern and where the vehicles ended up," Lt. Greg Lombardo of the San Jose Police told KPIX 5.
The driver of the SUV took off. When police arrived, they found another man wandering around the SUV. It is unclear how he is connected to the crash.
Friday's crash is San Jose's 11th traffic fatality of the year.
