Sonoma Police Discover Marijuana Grow During Bar Assault Arrests

SONOMA (CBS/AP) -- Sonoma County authorities discovered a marijuana grow while arresting one of two suspects Thursday morning for an assault in a bar last month, a Sonoma police sergeant said.

Javier Chavez, 20, of Boyes Hot Springs, and Ramon Manzo, 22, of Sonoma, were wanted for the gang-related assault on March 23 in Steiner's Tavern in Sonoma, Sgt. Spencer Crum said.

Six suspects attacked two victims with a knife and a beer bottle, Crum said. The victim who was attacked with a knife escaped, but the other was badly injured by the beer bottle and received 50 stitches in his head.

The injured victim was not a gang member and the reason for the attack is unknown.

Four suspects were immediately arrested and Chavez and Manzo were wanted on warrants, Crum said.

Chavez was arrested by the Sonoma County Multi-Agency Gang Enforcement Team in the 17100 block of state Highway 12 in Boyes Hot Springs, Crum said.

Manzo was arrested by the sheriff's office's SWAT team in the 100 block of Leveroni Road in Sonoma. Narcotics detectives found a large marijuana indoor and outdoor growing operation with more than 400 plants, Crum said.

Manzo was arrested on the warrant and on suspicion cultivation of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sales and committing a felony while out on bail, Crum said.

Manzo also was out on bail from an unrelated case in Napa County, Crum said.

Evidence of gang involvement was seized from the Boyes Hot Springs and Sonoma arrests' locations, Crum said.
