San Francisco District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin, who represents the waterfront, North Beach and Chinatown areas, told KPIX that police informed him that one person was arrested and a second person was detained following the incident which involved gunfire exchanged between moving cars.

The first shooting was reported at Beach and Stockton streets, across from Pier 39 at about 6:48 p.m. The other happened moments later at Embarcadero and Howard Streets.

Officers believe there were possibly two vehicles involved in the shooting.

A bullet-riddled black SUV with Nevada license plates that crashed farther south on the Embarcadero at Howard St. was a focus of police investigation.

A witness shared a video to KPIX of what she described as a young girl on the ground and officers tending to her at the location. She said she saw a rolling gun battle between two cars and erratic driving before the SUV crashed. Video of the scene showed airbags were deployed in the crashed vehicle.

Police initially did not say how many people were injured in the second shooting incident. At least one individual was injured on his arm by broken glass.

During a late-night press conference, San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott provided an update, saying there were three people injured at the second scene at Embarcadero and Howard from "errant gunfire" due to glass shards. Those injuries were not life-threatening.

Additionally, two young girls were struck by one of the cars during the chase and gun battle. One of them, a 10-year-old, was hospitalized, but her injuries were not life-threatening. The second, a 16-year-old girl, was not injured.

Scott also confirmed that of the two shooting victims injured in the initial exchange of gunfire, one suffered life-threatening injuries and the second was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police arrived at the initial scene within four minutes of it receiving the report of gunfire. Scott said the shooting was a targeted incident and not random.

Authorities are asking anyone with information or cell phone video of the shootings to contact police as the investigation continues.
