5 Shot at Hayward Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery
UNION CITY (CBS SF) -- Two victims were in critical condition and three others were being treated for gunshot wounds early Friday after gunmen opened fire on mourners at a cemetery in Union City, police said.
Union City police said they received numerous 911 calls reporting gunfire at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park and Funeral Home located at 32992 Mission Blvd at 7:04 p.m. Thursday.
Arriving officers discovered three gunshot victims, who were immediately transported to the hospital. As the investigation continued, a fourth victim was located a distance away from the scene and also taken away for treatment.
A short time later, police were called from a local hospital advising that they were treating a victim of a gunshot wound who had self-transported after leaving the scene at Chapel of the Chimes.
Two of the victims are in critical condition, the other three are in stable condition. The names, ages, and gender of the victims are not being released at this time.
Kamille Varilla de Guzman was at a viewing for her mother inside the chapel. She said the shooting was related to another service at the facility and the 100-plus mourners at her mother's service were told to shelter in place by the funeral director.
"We didn't know they were gunshots," she told reporters. "We just thought it was a noise outside...I'm just thankful that all my guests (at her mother's service) are okay."
The motive for the shooting was still under investigation and the shooting suspects remained at large and police were seeking help from the public to identify those responsible for this shooting.
