Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg To Speak At UC Berkeley Commencement
BERKELEY (CBS SF) – Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has been named speaker for UC Berkeley's upcoming commencement in May.
University officials announced Wednesday that seniors voted Sandberg as their top choice as commencement speaker.
Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said in a university statement that Sandberg is an "exceptionally important leader and thinker at several of the Bay Area's most groundbreaking technology companies," referencing her leadership roles at Facebook and previously at Google.
An advocate for gender equality, particularly in the workplace, Sandberg has made it her mission to encourage women to seek leadership roles. In a 2011 commencement address, Sandberg urged the women of Barnard College to "Lean In" and have high ambitions. Sandberg wrote a best-selling book also titled "Lean In" and established a non-profit promoting women business leaders with the same name.
Sandberg will deliver the commencement address to graduating seniors and their families at Memorial Stadium on May 14th.
