Sharks Trade Fan Favorite Patrick Marleau To Pittsburgh Penguins
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Looking toward the future, the struggling San Jose Sharks traded long-time fan favorite Patrick Marleau to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 3rd round draft pick, general manager Doug Wilson announced Monday.
The swap came in the final hours before the NHL's trade deadline. Should the Penguins win the 2020 Stanley Cup, the draft selection would change from the third round to Pittsburgh's second-round selection in 2021.
"Patrick is one of the most iconic players to ever wear the Sharks uniform," Wilson said in a statement. "Although we have had a disappointing season in San Jose, he deserves every opportunity to have a chance at winning a Stanley Cup, and we're happy to help accommodate that. We wish him the best of luck."
Marleau has posted 20 points (ten goals, ten assists) in 58 games with the Sharks this season, after being signed as an unrestricted free agent on Oct. 9, 2019.
In 1,715 NHL games with San Jose and Toronto, Marleau has recorded 1,186 points (561 goals, 625 assists).
On the Sharks all-time franchise list, he ranks first in games played (1,551), goals (518), points (1,102), PP goals (161), SH goals (17) and game-winning goals (101).
San Jose also acquired a first-round 2020 draft selection and forward Anthony Greco from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Barclay Goodrow and a 2020 third round draft selection.
"Barclay has been an extremely valuable, team-first player to our organization for the past six seasons," Wilson said. "His story of perseverance and hard work from being an undrafted free agent to being one of the most versatile players in the National Hockey League has been a pleasure to watch. You hate to lose players like this, but this is an important step in acquiring valuable assets that can be utilized by our club moving forward."
Goodrow has posted 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in 62 games with the Sharks this season. In 268 NHL games with San Jose, Goodrow has recorded 71 points (26 goals, 45 assists).
Greco was playing with Syracuse (AHL) after recently being acquired by Tampa from the Florida Panthers organization, where he signed as an unrestricted free agent in 2017.
In 40 games with Syracuse and Springfield this season, Greco has posted 20 points (ten goals, ten assists).
And the team was able to acquired defenseman Brandon Davidson from the Calgary Flames in exchange for future considerations.
Davidson, 28, has appeared in seven games this season for Calgary, recording 13 shots on goal. He also has spent time with the Stockton Heat in 2019-20, scoring 20 points (three goals, 17 assists) with a plus-six rating in 34 contests.
Over the course of his NHL career, he has registered 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists) in 169 career games with the Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Chicago Blackhawks.
