SF Considers Plan To Make Stretch Of Powell Street Pedestrian Only
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- After closing off a stretch of Market Street to traffic, San Francisco lawmakers are looking to make one of the city's most iconic areas 'pedestrian only.'
Tuesday the SFMTA Board of Directors met to review The Powell Street Safety and Sidewalk Improvement Pilot.
The 18-month pilot program would allow only mass transit, taxis and commercial vehicles on a stretch of Powell Street near Union Square.
Thousands of tourists flock to the area to see the historic Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable car lines. SFMTA says their goal is to make the area safer for pedestrians.
If the board approves the plan, there would be turn restrictions in effect on Powell between Ellis and Geary.
