New Report Details Sexual Assaults On Bay Area College Campuses
STANFORD (KPIX 5) – As the Obama administration raises awareness of sexual assault on college campuses, new federal data shows that Bay Area institutions are not immune to the problem.
Nationwide, there was a 25 percent spike in sexual assaults from 2012 to 2013.
The report breaks down sexual assaults into subcategories of rape and fondling incidents on a school's main campus in 2014.
Among Bay Area schools, Stanford had the highest number of sexual assault cases, with 26 cases of rape and four cases of fondling. At UC Berkeley, there were 15 rape cases and nine fondling cases.
San Francisco State University reported five rape cases and no fondling cases, while San Jose State University had two rape cases and 13 fondling cases.
The report was released weeks after a jury recently found a former star swimmer at Stanford guilty for forcing himself on a student who was unconscious after an on-campus party.
Meanwhile in Berkeley, the school is dealing with a massive sexual harassment scandal involving 17 victims. At least 12 professors, coaches and employees have either resigned or have been fired.
