Santa Rosa Man Arrested After Violent Confrontation With Police

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) – A man was arrested Thursday in Santa Rosa in connection with a violent confrontation with officers.

Raul Valencia, 44, was arrested on suspicion of obstruction, resisting by means of threat or violence, battery on an officer, battery on a paramedic, vandalism and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

On Thursday at 6:56 p.m., an officer with the Santa Rosa Police Department was driving south on Marlow Road when a man standing on the raised center median and waving a T-shirt, yelled at the officer for a ride and then yelled he would kill the officer, police said.

The officer stopped to contact the man, later identified as Valencia, and the man then ran up to several vehicles that had slowed to see what was going on, police said.

Valencia then started yelling and punching the driver side windows of the vehicles, police said.

As additional officers arrived at the scene, the subject ran toward a Jack in the Box and threw a cellphone through a large glass window, police said.

Police said Valencia then ran into traffic again and charged at officers, challenging them to fight.

Officers were eventually able to wrestle Valencia to the ground and secure him in handcuffs.

During the arrest, Valencia punched and kicked officers and medical personnel, police said.

He was treated at a hospital and then booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
