San Quentin's Death Row Is Running Out Of Room
SAN QUENTIN (CBS SF) -- San Quentin's Death Row is home to some of the state's most notorious criminals, but the prison may be running out of room for them, prompting Governor Jerry Brown to ask for millions of dollars to pay for more cells.
The governor is asking the State Legislature for $3.2 million to open 97 more cells on death row.
The last execution at San Quentin was carried out in 2006, before U.S. District Court Judge Jeremy Fogel concluded that the procedure had numerous flaws, including inadequate training of staff and a poorly lit, overcrowded and badly designed execution chamber.
California has more than 700 inmates on death row.
The request is part of Brown's proposed budget.
