High-Speed Chase Ends In Deadly San Pablo Crash
SAN PABLO (CBS SF) – A driver speeding away from a traffic stop flipped his car early Tuesday morning in San Pablo and died at the scene of the solo crash, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.
Just after midnight, a deputy attempted to stop a gold Lexus at the intersection of San Pablo Dam Road and Mifflin Avenue in El Sobrante.
The driver ran a red light at roughly 50 mph, then led a pursuit at speeds that reached 100 mph on surface streets until the deputy stopped the chase for safety reasons and lost sight of the suspect vehicle, sheriff's officials said.
The sheriff's office said roughly 12 seconds later, the deputy found the vehicle after having rolled over several times, landing on the roof and trapping the driver inside. However, surveillance video of the final moments of the crash obtained by KPIX shows deputies arriving within about four seconds of the crash.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the driver died at the scene. His name is not yet being released.
Investigators are not yet certain why the suspect fled from the initial traffic stop. By 11:45 a.m., the busy roadway had been reopened.
Tuesday afternoon shortly after 3 p.m., the Contra Costa Sheriff's office identified the driver as 29-year-old El Sobrante resident Narayan Sanwal.
The case is being investigated by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, the sheriff's office and the San Pablo Police Department.
Anyone with additional information about the case is asked to contact the sheriff's office at (925) 313-2600.
