San Leandro Schools Closing Achievement Gap Between Students

SAN LEANDRO (KCBS) -- San Leandro's public school system has been recognized by the state superintendent for helping to close the achievement gap between white students and students of color on standardized tests.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson says California's students did better on their standardized tests this year over last, but it's still not enough.

"We don't see a closing of the gap yet, we see sort of all boats rise, all students' scores up. But, we want to get better at closing the gap, the achievement gap," Torlakson said.

The school has taken a holistic approach to teaching.

"Really understanding the whole child – the academic success, and the emotional," Co-Principal Ronald Richadrson said.

Torlakson says he'd like to see San Leandra's techniques used throughout the state.
