12-year-old boy riding scooter fatally struck in San Jose

A pre-teen boy riding a scooter was struck and killed in an intersection Tuesday afternoon, San Jose police said.

The crash happened in the area of Leigh and Camden avenues around 4:21 p.m. Police initially said the victim was a juvenile, but did not disclose their age. They later confirmed it was an 11-year-old boy riding a non-electric scooter north near a marked crosswalk

Investigators determined a man driving a 2006 Chevrolet truck west on Camden hit the boy. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene and his name was not immediately released.

The driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with officers, police said.

Anyone with information about the case, which was the 30th fatal collision and the 11th pedestrian death on San Jose streets in 2024, is asked to contact Detective O'Brien with the San Jose police traffic investigations unit at 3527@sanjoseca.gov or (408) 277-4654.
