Driver kills pedestrian in San Jose in city's 59th fatal crash of year

SAN JOSE – A pedestrian in San Jose has died after being struck by a driver Wednesday night, the 61st person to be killed in a traffic collision in the city this year, breaking last year's record.

Officers were called to Perrymont Avenue and Little Orchard Street near The Plant shopping center shortly after 7:30 p.m.

According to a San Jose Police Department press release, a 2004 Buick sports utility vehicle driven by an adult male driver was traveling northbound on Little Orchard Street when it struck an adult female pedestrian. Police said the woman was walking across Little Orchard Street outside of any marked crosswalk.

The woman sustained major injuries in the collision. Responding officers rendered life saving measures, but the pedestrian succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. No drug or alcohol influence is suspected.

Gloria Ploch, who lives near the scene of the crash, said the intersection where the crash took place is dangerous, especially at night.

"I lived here on Old Orchard Mobile Home, right by the street for 20 years, and several people have been killed," Ploch said. "I've been to the city, I've talked to the city several times, many times about putting a crosswalk here. It's very dark."

The identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office after confirming the her identity and notifying next of kin.  

According to police, the incident was the city's 59th fatal collision on the city's streets so far in 2022. The victim was the 31st pedestrian death of the year.

Last year, a record 60 people were killed in traffic fatalities on San Jose streets.
