SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – The U.S. Census Bureau said Thursday that San Jose is now among the 10 most populous cities in the United States, with more than 1 million people calling the Silicon Valley city home.

According to the Census Bureau's population estimate, San Jose's population is now 1,015,785, up 11,964 residents in 2014.

San Jose joins Los Angeles and San Diego among California cities with more than 1 million residents.

By comparison, San Francisco is the 13th most populous city in the U.S., with 852,000 residents. Oakland has 413,000 residents, making it 45th on the list.

The government's figures echo a recent estimate showing 3 million people now live in Silicon Valley. According to Joint Venture Silicon Valley, the area known for its tech industry is defined as Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, along with Fremont, Union City, Newark and Scotts Valley.

Researchers say Silicon Valley gains one person, either through births or immigration, every 16 minutes.
