San Jose Fire Crews Respond to Grass Fire, CHP Closing Monterey Rd.

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- San Jose Firefighters responded to a two-alarm grass fire Friday afternoon.

UPDATE 7:11 p.m. -- Fire crews reported that the fire is 50% contained and the latest estimate was 143 acres.

UPDATE 5:03 p.m. -- Fire crews reported that they succeeded in halting the spread of the fire and that the blaze was 20% contained. Also, there had been no injuries and no need to order evacuations.

The cause of the fire was still unknown.

UPDATE 3:42 p.m. -- The San Jose Fire Dept. tweeted that crews expected to contain the fire within 2-3 hours.

The fire, estimated to be about 3-4 acres and reported around 1:40 p.m., burned near the 8400 block of Monterey Rd. 

By then, fire crews reported that the fire grew to 40 acres.

As of 3:50 p.m., no evacuation orders were issued and no injuries reported.

Crews requested that California Highway Patrol to close Monterey Rd. in both directions between approximately Bailey Ave and Metcalf Rd. Officials asked residents to avoid the area. 

Video tweeted after 4 p.m. by @Opinionatedhjby showed that the fire had destroyed the Coyote Creek Golf Course.
