SAN JOSE — San Jose recorded its 28th homicide of the year on the day before New Year's Eve, authorities said Tuesday.

The San Jose Police Department said officers responded around 7 p.m. Monday to a family disturbance along Payne Avenue. The caller told dispatchers that a suspect they knew had broken into their home was involved in a fight with multiple people inside.

Officers arrived to find a man and a woman each with a stab wound. Both were taken to area hospitals where the man was declared dead and the woman is expected to survive. The man's name will be released once the next of kin has been notified.

San Jose police have not identified the suspect but said he was arrested after a short foot chase. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on charges related to the homicide. Police said his name will be released in the coming days.

Investigators are still looking into a motive.
