Giants Free Agent Ryan Vogelsong Reportedly Set To Sign With Houston Astros

HOUSTON (CBS SF) -- Another key contributor to two of the three World Series titles for San Francisco Giants appears to be headed elsewhere, according to published reports.

On Monday, Fox Sports reported that the Houston Astros were in serious discussions with free agent pitcher Ryan Vogelsong, while KRIV-TV reported Vogelsong was in Houston for his Astros physical.

Vogelsong, an All-Star for the Giants in 2011, told KRIV he was not ready to comment on his status.

CBS Sports reported Vogelsong and the Astros were hoping to finalize a deal on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old Vogelsong played the last 4 seasons with the Giants after beginning his career with San Francisco in 2000. In between, Vogelsong also pitched for the Pirates and played in Japan before contemplating his retirement in 2010.

In 2011, he returned to the Giants when starter Barry Zito was injured and promptly became a mainstay in the rotation, earning an All-Star nod for the first time in his career.

The revitalized Vogelsong became a fan favorite in his second stint with the Giants, and is known for his intense manner on pitching days.

'Vogey' is also known to come up strong in big games and is 3-0 in postseason play with a 2.92 ERA – prompting a second nickname, 'Vogelstrong.' His teammates voted him the 2011 Willie Mac Award for outstanding leadership.

Over his 10-year Major League career, Vogelsong is 49-57 with a 4.42 ERA.
