San Francisco Pride Celebration A Huge Love Fest On Civic Center Plaza

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) -- Pride Weekend culminated in a huge block party in Civic Center Plaza. The celebration was reminiscent of an old school San Francisco love-in -- on steroids.

After Sunday morning's parade, hundreds of thousands spilled into the 2.6 acre pedestrian mall where they could dance to hip-hop and alternative music artists on the main stage, laze on the lawn, eat, drink and mingle.

People of all ages, gay, straight, every race and ethnicity held hands, hugged, cooed and kissed.

Sure, there were plenty of emergency medical technicians, firefighters and police on hand, but by late afternoon the crowd was still calm.

This was the first Pride Weekend for Robert Mendes of Concord. "I'm amazed at how cool everyone is," he remarked. "I thought it would be crazy."

Even KPIX5's very own Liam Mayclem was feeling the love. From the main stage, he egged on couples among the crowd to pucker for the KissCam.

And of course, they lovingly obliged.
