San Francisco Police Union Holding Raffle For Indicted Officers

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – The San Francisco Police Officers Association has scheduled a series of fundraisers to pay for the legal defense of several officers facing federal charges for alleged civil rights violations. A raffle with some high-priced prizes is among the events planned.

The San Francisco Police Officers' Association believes the five officers and one former officer are being judged guilty prematurely in the public eye.

A flyer on the union's Facebook page included the slogan: "Sometimes there is Justice. Sometimes, there is just us."

One of the fundraisers, scheduled for May, will have raffle prizes that include a trip to Ireland, an iPad and a 60 inch television.

The officers were indicted last month on federal charges.

San Francisco's public defender said the officers were caught on tape searching rooms of drug suspects without proper permission, a Constitutional violation. Some officers are also accused of selling drugs and falsifying police reports.

The president of the SFPOA has denounced the indictments against the officers, saying they are based on the questionable testimony of unreliable informant witnesses.

The first fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday.
