San Francisco Police Chief Urges Giants Fans To Behave If Team Wins Pennant
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - San Francisco police have canceled days-off in preparation for a possible Giants win Thursday night which would put the team in the World Series for the third time in the last five years.
If the Giants win the National League pennant at AT&T Park, San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr expects celebration, including impromptu street parties like in 2010 and 2012.
"Certainly nobody wants to wake up tomorrow morning, just because they celebrated the Giants game, in jail with a case pending," Suhr said, urging fans to stay peaceful and avoid a repeat of the vandalism that marred the 2012 festivities.
"Let's act like we've been there before, because we have been," said Suhr.
Two years ago, several businesses were damaged and a Muni bus was destroyed by fire. Video evidence from surveillance cameras and cell phones led to several felony arrests.
"Every single person now pretty much is a walking video camera," he said.
Police are planning to re-route Muni bus service around any spontaneous street closures necessary because the sidewalks simply cannot contain the jubilant crowds should the Giants win.
