San Francisco extending metered parking hours starting this summer

PIX Now - Tuesday 6 am 5/16/23

SAN FRANCISCO -- Drivers can expect to pay for parking more often in San Francisco starting this summer as the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is extending metered parking an additional four hours.

Parking meters will run through 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday; currently, they end at 6 p.m. The city is also adding meter hours on Sundays from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.

SFMTA is phasing in the plan across the city over 18 months, beginning this July with Fisherman's Wharf and the Dogpatch. The final phase will begin in May 2024 in neighborhoods like Chinatown, the Tenderloin and Bayview.

City officials said the plan will increase parking availability in commercial districts and other busy areas. SFMTA said the ultimate driving force was an expected $130 million budget deficit starting in 2025 when the agency stops receiving federal pandemic aid.

"Without new revenue, the agency will be forced to cut the equivalent of 20 Muni lines," said SFMTA in its report announcing the plan. "Additional revenue from extending parking meter hours can help prevent these cuts, which would disproportionately impact people with limited incomes, people of color, older adults and people with disabilities."
