San Francisco, Oakland School Districts Apply For Waiver On No Child Left Behind Requirements
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- School district officials in San Francisco and Oakland applied for a waiver to free them from the educational requirements of the nation's No Child Left Behind law.
The Bay Area districts are joined by Fresno, Long Beach, Los Angeles and Santa Ana.
The coalition known as the California Office to Reform Education originally applied and received relief from the law after the state chose not to request a waiver. This latest move would extend a three-year extension of the waiver first granted in 2013.
The law requires students test proficient in math and reading or face a series of interventions in exchange for developing new accountability plans and targets for raising achievement.
