San Francisco Firefighter Injured Battling 2-Alarm Hayes Valley Blaze

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A two-alarm fire damaged residences on Carmelita Street in Hayes Valley, displacing 11 people and left a firefighter injured Sunday morning, the San Francisco Fire Department said.

Officials said crews responded to a blaze in the 100 block of 69 Carmelita St. at around 3:30 a.m. Arriving crews found smoke streaming out of the third floor of the multi-unit building. A second alarm was quickly called in the halt the spread of the blaze within the structure and to prevent from spreading to other buildings in densely packed residential neighborhood.

Residences at 77-79 Carmelita St. sustained fire damage, while residences at 99 Carmelita and 661-663 Waller St. were damaged by exposure to the fire, officials said.

The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.

The fire was contained around 5 a.m. A cause of the fire was still under investigation.
