Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff Closing Pay Gaps Between Men, Women At Company
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Many of Salesforce's 16,000 employees could be getting raises just because they are women after CEO Marc Benioff crunched the numbers and found a disturbing pay gap between men and women.
Benioff is systematically raising the salaries of his female employees to make sure they are paid equally.
"This is a really exciting day at Salesforce. I hope it sends a message to the industry in general that Salesforce is not only an equal opportunity employer, but that we walk the walk," Salesforce Foundation President Suzanne DiBianca said.
In California, women make about eighty-four cents for every dollar men make.
Despite Benioff's announcement, Noreen Farrell of Equal Rights Advocates says the movement has a long way to go.
"This is one announcement by one company, but Salesforece has been a leader in industry changes, and I'm a big believer in peer pressure, so I hope the dominoes keep falling," Farrell said.
Only 29-percent of the employees at Salesforce are women, but the company is vowing to change that as well.
