Robin Williams Tunnel Sign Goes Up On Waldo Grade
SAUSALITO (CBS SF) -- Nearly two years after his death, a sign was quietly erected early Tuesday by a Caltrans crew naming the famed Highway 101 rainbow tunnel connecting San Francisco with Marin County after the late actor and comedian Robin Williams.
The proposal from Assemblyman Marc Levine, D-San Rafael, to change the name of the Waldo Tunnel moved through the state legislature last year and was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown.
"Robin Williams grew up and attended Redwood High School in Larkspur, went to College of Marin," Levine said at the time of his proposal. "Also, of course, launched his comedy career in the clubs of San Francisco. This tunnel really connects the San Francisco and Marin communities and is a perfect way of tying those parts of his life together."
It cost about $3,000 for Caltrans to make new signs, <a href="http://www.marinij.com/general-news/20150629/legislators-clear-plan-to-rename-waldo-tunnel-for-robin-williams" target="_blank">according to the Marin Independent Journal</a>.
That money came from donations.
The tunnel had been named after the mid-19th century Whig Party candidate William Waldo.
Williams committed suicide Aug. 11, 2014, at his home in Tiburon. He was 63.
