Roberta Gonzales Explains Why Covering The Big Storm Is Like Running A Marathon

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: Roberta, do you prepare any differently for a big storm than a typical day at work?

A: One of the most powerful storms in the past decade is poised to slice across the Bay Area starting Wednesday night, making for a busy end to the week in the CBS San Francisco newsrooms.  When providing "up to the minute Weather Reporting" for TV, KCBS Radio and Social Media, people often ask "how do I prepare for a storm?" The Answer is easy: I prepare as if I am suiting up for a Race.

Last week when computer models first signaled a major storm heading this way, I begin to check all my weather equipment. When preparing for a Triathlon, I do the same thing. I make sure my Bike is in good racing order, tires inflated, chain and derailuer in great shape.

Knowing I never sleep well before a Race, I make sure I get proper sleep two nights before my event. That means Tuesday night, I will require proper rest for a long stormy Thursday and Friday.

Sounds extreme, but today I begin hydrating and eating well. I work out for strength. I do my homework. All this will help sustain me and fuel my endurance through a extremely busy and sometime chaotic schedule ahead.

I hope this gives you a glimpse inside the life of a Weathercaster. I'm prepared and ready to do my part to make sure you receive the most accurate Weather information possible.

I would love to hear your Weather observations and concerns! You can email me at: gonzales@kpix.cbs.com

Be safe and drive carefully. Listen to all Advisories, Watch and Warnings to calculate navigating around the Bay Area in adverse Weather conditions. Be prepared. Game on!
