Update: Crews cap gas leak in Richmond neighborhood that prompted evacuations
RICHMOND – A gas leak that prompted the evacuation of a Richmond neighborhood on Monday has been resolved, officials said.
Shortly before noon, the Richmond Fire Department announced a leak was in the area of Shasta Street and Carlson Boulevard. In response, residents on the 1900 Block of Carlson Boulevard, the 1800 Block of Shasta Street and the 1800 Block of Butte Street were being evacuated.
Crews with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. responded to the scene.
Around 12:30 p.m., city officials said the leak was successfully stopped. Atmospheric air monitoring in the affected area confirmed that the situation was all clear and that residents were being allowed to return to their homes.
All streets in the area have been reopened into traffic.
A spokesperson from PG&E told CBS News Bay Area that the leak was caused by a third-party performing work in the area. The flow of gas was stopped around 11:50 a.m.
The utility said that crews remained in the area Monday afternoon, making repairs to isolate the section of damaged pipeline.
PG&E urges customers who may smell natural gas or suspect an emergency to call 911.
