Rescuer Shot While Searching For Missing Elderly Hiker In Remote NorCal

YUBA CITY (AP) -- A volunteer rescuer who was shot in the hip while searching for a missing 75-year-old man in a remote Northern California area is in stable condition.

At least two shots were heard at the time.

We're told the volunteer was shot in the hip, but was conscious and talking at the scene.

He was airlifted to the hospital.

Two other volunteers were with the victim. They were not hit.

Sheriff Keith Royal says the remote area is making it difficult to search for the shooter.

Helicopters from four law enforcement agencies, some with heat-detecting sensors are searching for that shooter.

The Sacramento Bee says the volunteers were looking for a 75-year-old hiker who is missing along the South Yuba River.

The gunman remains at large. The older man remains missing and is not believed to have any involvement in the shooting. A motive in the shooting was not known.
