Record Number of UC Applicants; Napolitano-Brown Rift Leaves Allowed Enrollments Unclear
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF)-- University of California admissions officers are sifting through a record number of applications, but it's still unclear exactly how many new students can enroll.
The uncertainty stems from differences between UC President Janet Napolitano and Governor Jerry Brown.
Because she says the state has failed to give the university system enough money, Napolitano has planned to raise tuition by as much as five percent this fall and give more slots to out-of-state students.
Meanwhile, the governor is threatening to withhold $120 million in state funds unless the university keeps its tuition rates and non-resident enrollment flat.
