Police Shoot, Kill Man Waving A Baseball Bat At Walmart In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (KPIX 5) - Police were investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting at Walmart in San Leandro.

It happened around 3 p.m. at the Walmart on Hesperian Boulevard.

Officers responded to a report of a man waving a baseball bat around the store.

When they arrived, they saw the suspect near the shopping cart storage bay. Officers told him to put down the bat, but the man walked toward them.

Police said they tried to tase the man but it didn't stop him. That's when one of the two responding officers opened fire. The man died outside the store entrance.

"Walmart does have surveillance video," said San Leandro Police Lt. Ted Henderson. "We should know relatively soon, but we have to review the video."

No officers were hurt. So far, the suspect has not been identified.

A spokesperson for Walmart issued a statement Saturday night.

"We appreciate the quick response of local authorities and are thankful no one else was injure,"said Director of Media Relations Randy Hargrove. "We will continue to assist law enforcement and are referring all requests for information to them."

The officers involved were placed on administrative leave. Meantime the District Attorney's Office will also conduct an independent investigation.
