San Mateo Mall Homicide Suspects Detained Following High-Speed Pursuit

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- Two people were detained in San Francisco following a high-speed vehicle pursuit from San Mateo after a 31-year-old man was killed in a shooting near a shopping mall Tuesday night, police said.

Police are investigating the man's death as a homicide and are urging the public to stay away from the crime scene, located in a parking lot just off of South El Camino Real, close to the intersection of 36th Avenue and Colegrove Street in San Mateo.

Police said the shooting was reported just before 7 p.m. and that officers arriving on scene found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite rendering medical aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Officers did not locate a suspect or suspect vehicle at the scene, but the California Highway Patrol identified a possible suspect vehicle traveling on northbound Interstate Highway 280.

CHP officers pursued the speeding vehicle onto northbound I-380 and then onto northbound U.S. Highway 101 towards San Francisco.

Officers were ultimately able to stop the suspect vehicle and detain the driver and a passenger, roughly 20 miles north of the crime scene, at Market Street and Octavia Boulevard in San Francisco.

San Mateo police said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and that they are continuing to pursue leads. They are asking anyone who may have information about the homicide to contact a police detective at (650) 522-7670, anonymously call the San Mateo Police Department's Secret Witness Line at (650) 522-7676 or submit an anonymous online tip to the San Mateo Police Department at: http://tinyurl.com/SMPDTips.

The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released, nor have the identities of the two people in the fleeing suspect vehicle.
