Police And Wildlife Officials Searching For Bear Seen In Residential Tracy Neighborhood

TRACY (CBS SF) -- Tracy police officers have been unable to track down a bear spotted by several people in a residential area Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

A person reported the first bear sighting Monday at 8:45 p.m. in the area of Lowell Ave. and Orchard Pkwy. Officers were called to the scene but did not locate the animal.

Then at about 1:56 a.m., another person reported seeing the bear in the area of Grantline Rd. and Corral Hollow Rd. and snapped a photo of the animal.

Lt. Alex Nicou says an extensive search of the area around Galli Park turned up a couple of scratch marks that indicate a bear had been climbing around.

The Department of Fish and Game has been notified as police continue their search. Students who walk to school are advised to take caution. Wild animals are dangerous and can be provoked when concerned or in a stressful and unfamiliar environment.

Nicou said wildlife officials believe probably climbed down the Altamont Pass and through some nearby farmland.

So far, no people, pets or wildlife have been hurt and no garbage cans or dumpsters have been raided.
