A two-alarm fire Tuesday afternoon in an apartment building near Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill at least partially destroyed two apartments and severely damaged another eight before firefighters could control the blaze.

No one was injured, but at least 10 apartments were evacuated, according to a spokesperson for Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

Firefighters were called to Viking Park Apartments at 2079 Norse Drive, near the college's southwest parking lot, at 2:53 p.m. Investigators said the fire likely started in a common area between the bathrooms of two units where plumbers were working.

About 50 firefighters attacked the blaze inside the units and on the building's roof, bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

Most of the damage to eight surrounding units was from smoke and water, a Con Fire spokesperson said.

Traffic was heavy in the area, as College Park High School across Viking Drive let out for the day as firefighters worked.

The Red Cross was called to help the displaced residents find temporary shelter.
