Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Freight Train In East Bay

NEWARK (CBS SF) -- A person was struck and killed by a freight train in Newark Monday afternoon, police and fire officials said.

At 1:42 p.m., police and firefighters responded to a report of an accident at Jarvis Avenue and Fircrest Street, according to Alameda County fire spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

A Union Pacific train struck a victim who was on the tracks, Union Pacific spokesman Justin Jacobs said.

No other injuries were reported, according to Jacobs.

Newark police and Union Pacific police are investigating the incident and remain on scene this afternoon.

Jarvis Avenue and Haley Street are closed in both directions at the railroad crossing. The intersection could be closed into the nighttime hours, police said.

Drivers should expect significant delays on surrounding streets, according to police.
