Passenger standing outside of vehicle after Highway 13 crash in Oakland struck and killed by hit-and-run driver

Raw video: Scene of fatal crash involving pedestrian on Highway 13 in Oakland

A person standing outside a vehicle following a crash on state Highway 13 in Oakland Sunday night was struck and killed by another vehicle, which then fled the scene, authorities said Monday.

The California Highway Patrol said dispatchers received a call at 10:46 p.m. Sunday about a non-injury crash involving two vehicles on southbound Highway 13 south of Joaquin Miller Road/Lincoln Avenue. The crash involved a white Toyota "Zip Car" rental and a black sedan. The CHP said the Toyota came to rest blocking the slow lane and the driver and passenger of the Toyota got out of the vehicle and stood nearby.

Four minutes later, the CHP said responding officers learned of a secondary crash at the same location involving a vehicle versus a pedestrian. It was determined the passenger of the Toyota was standing on the right shoulder when a second black sedan came up on the disabled Toyota, hit the brakes and swerved to the right, avoiding hitting the Toyota but hitting the passenger standing outside the vehicle, the CHP said.

The second black sedan continued on its way without stopping, the CHP said. The passenger who was struck died of his injuries at the scene.

There was no information available about the suspect vehicle or the driver. The black sedan that hit the pedestrian would have sustained significant damage to its front bumper, hood, and/or front windshield.

The CHP urged anyone with information about the crash to call CHP Oakland Area at (510) 457-2875 and ask for Officer M. Contreras who is investigating the incident.
