Pair Of Strong Earthquakes Strike Southern Mexico
VERACRUZ, Mexico (CBS/AP) - A strong earthquake shook Mexico's Gulf Coast early Tuesday, just hours after another moderate tremor hit near the Guatemala border.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports that the morning quake, with a magnitude of 6.3, was centered in the state of Veracruz, about 260 miles east-southeast of Mexico City. No significant damage has been reported as a result of the quake, likely because the epicenter was recorded well below the earth's surface, at a depth of 59 miles. The quake struck at 5:46 a.m. local time.
A magnitude 5.4 quake was recorder hours earlier, just north of the Mexico Guatemala border. That quake hit at 10:33 local time, about 125 miles west of Guatemala City. That quake was recorded at a depth of 51.3 miles. No significant damage has been reported from either quake.
