Overturned Tanker Spills Porta-Potty Water In 6-Car Accident; Causing Injuries & Blocked Lanes On Hwy 280 In San Jose

SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- A six-vehicle crash and sewage-tanker spill closed all lanes on southbound Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose Wednesday morning and caused minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was first reported at 5:10 a.m. near the South 11th Street onramp, CHP Officer Matt Rasmussen said.

"I'm not sure what happened but six vehicles total involved—minor injuries, I have a couple of parties being transported to local hospitals," he said.

San Jose fire crews, meanwhile, were cleaning up the scene as the tanker was carrying liquid chemicals used for portable toilets. Nearly 100 gallons of clean blue liquid spilled onto the highway.

San Jose fire Battalion Chief Jose Guerrero said it was fortunate that the tanker was mostly empty at the time of the collision.

"He had not picked up any sewage yet, so he was en route. So he tells us that it's clean, although we're testing that also—it appears to come back as true that it's just a deodorizer and I just don't know how much of that," he said.

The driver of a BMW involved in the accident, who didn't want to use his name, told KCBS that he entered the freeway just after 5 a.m. when it started raining causing him to spin out possibly causing a chain-reaction collision.

Two people, who suffered minor injuries, were transported to area hospital.

The CHP will continue its investigation.
