BART's entire system needs upgrades. The Bay Area's bridges, overpasses, and freeways need work. The region also needs more buses, ferry boats, and trains.

Metropolitan Transportation Commission Chair Dave Cortese told KCBS that of the top 20 critical projects - only three have the green light.

"The fact of the matter is they're giving us the caution light. They're telling us, 'you know, if you don't get on it, you're gonna have a big problem here. You're underfunded – you've got big problems," Cortese said.

Will Kempton is Executive Director of Transportation California, and said Sacramento needs to get to work in drumming up more funding.

"We want to make sure that people take the time to contact their legislators in Sacramento, and say, 'we've got a problem. You need to deal with it," Kempton said.
