Woman Critically Injured In San Francisco Mission District Fire

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A woman suffered critical smoke inhalation injuries in a fire at a public housing complex in San Francisco's Mission District Thursday morning, a fire department spokesman said.

The one-alarm fire was reported at 7:14 a.m. in a closet at a unit in the Valencia Gardens complex at 390 Valencia St.

The woman was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and was in critical condition, fire spokesman Jonathan Baxter said.

The building's sprinkler system helped contain the fire to the unit where it started, although an adjacent unit sustained water damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and so far the only displaced resident is the hospitalized woman, he said.

Valencia Gardens is a 16-building complex run by the Mission Housing Development Corporation, which has a restoration contractor evaluating the extent of the damage from the fire and water and will determine whether any residents will have to relocate.
