6 wounded in Oakland school shooting; students, staff recall horror

OAKLAND – One of six people shot at an Oakland school campus in September has died, police said Friday.

"We are working with the Alameda County Coroners Office to determine the exact cause of death," police said in a statement.

Police were called at 12:49 p.m. on  Sept. 28 to a shooting in the 8200 block of Fontaine Street, near Interstate Highway 580. The shooting was at the King Estate campus in the Oakland Unified School District.

The shooters entered the campus and started shooting but missed their intended target or targets. All six victims were adults. Two people suffered critical wounds in the shooting.

The Oakland Unified School District identified the victim as David, a carpenter who worked in the district's Buildings and Grounds Department for 18 years. Oakland Unified did not release his last name.

"We are devastated by the loss of David, and we are heartbroken for his family and community. He will be profoundly missed. Our community mourns the loss of an OUSD hero and will be forever grateful for David's nearly two decades of service to our students, families, staff and schools," said a joint statement from acting superintendent Sondra Aguilera and superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell.

According to district officials, David was on the campus installing new countertops. Plans for a memorial were not immediately announced.

On Friday afternoon, police posted surveillance footage from the shooting to help identify the suspects.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Oakland Police Department at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950.
