Oakland Police Search For 3 Suspects Fleeing From Crashed Vehicle On I-580
OAKLAND (KCBS) — Oakland police are searching for three suspects who fled from a crashed vehicle Thursday afternoon on westbound I-580 near the I-980 interchange.
A California Highway Patrol spokesman Sean Wilkenfeld told KCBS the vehicle struck the concrete center divider at about 12 p.m. and then stalled out with the suspects fleeing on foot onto the city streets.
Investigators said the car may have been involved in a nearby shooting earlier in the day.
The car's three occupants had crashed into the highway's center divider and ran away, abandoning their white sedan, CHP officials said.
There were shell casings in the backseat of the car and it appeared the car had been shot at, according to the CHP. Oakland police seized the car as evidence.
Oakland police said there were reports of shots fired near the intersection of East 12th Street and 37th Avenue at 11:36 a.m., but it was not clear if the suspects who fled were involved in that incident.
No injuries have been reported from that gunfire.
One lane of the highway was briefly blocked during the investigation but reopened by 2 p.m., Wilkenfeld said. He said there is no active search for the suspects.
