Oakland Paying Nonprofits $340K To Enforce Worker, Tenant Laws
OAKLAND (CBS/AP) — The Oakland City Council is asking for outside help enforcing its minimum-wage and tenant-protection laws.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the council voted Tuesday to pay $340,000 to community organizations to address social disparities in the city. Initially the budget amendment proposed $1 million, but city officials said Oakland doesn't have that much money to spare.
The unanimously-passed motion calls for funding on the condition that new revenue becomes available.
Oakland's rents are climbing, which some council members say is creating a desperate need for more protections for lower-income residents. The median rent in Oakland has climbed from $1,921 in August 2013 to $2,650 in August 2015.
