Second Suspect Arrested in Fatal San Francisco Tenderloin District Shooting of Community Worker

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Police in San Francisco on Friday arrested a second suspect in connection with a fatal Aug. 17th shooting of a man known for his community work in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, according to authorities.

At approximately 12:57 a.m. on Aug, 17th, police officers received a call from a local hospital regarding a walk-in shooting victim. The victim, a 48-year-old male, was privately transported to the hospital with life-threatening
injuries.

Despite the efforts of the medical staff, the man died of his injuries.

Earlier this week, the city's Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as 48-year-old San Francisco resident Theodore Tolliver.

Tolliver was involved with several community groups, including the national organization Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice, where he served as a chapter coordinator for the organization's Bay Area chapter. Tolliver also served on the San Francisco Reentry Council starting in 2018, which brings together formerly incarcerated people and city leaders to coordinate resources for people exiting city jails.

Tolliver's family has set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his burial costs and to help his one-year-old son. So far, the account has raised over $12,000.

Police in San Francisco on Wednesday arrested 36-year-old Hermando Aresolo in Oakland as a suspect in Tolliver's murder.

Police on Friday announced that investigators developed information that identified 25-year-old Melvin Lopez as a second suspect in the murder. Friday morning at approximately 11 a.m., SFPD homicide investigators found Lopez on the 900 block of Bryant Street and took him into custody.

Lopez was transported to San Francisco County Jail where he was booked for murder, false imprisonment, accessory to a crime  and conspiracy. Although police have made an arrest, anyone with information about the murder is asked to call the Police Department's tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with "SFPD" at the start of the message.
