Oakland High School Students Continue Trump Protests
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- It has been almost a week since the election, but students in Oakland were still taking a stand against Donald Trump Monday by walking out of class.
Though they can't vote, the high school students said the walk out was their way to send a message to the president elect.
"Even though Donald Trump is our president and I know we cannot take him out of office, but we want to come out here and change his mindset that our voice needs to be heard," said Skyline High School student Martha Calmo. "And even though we are teenagers, we still got a voice."
The concern many students felt was over trumps proposed immigration policies.
During his interview with 60 minutes Sunday, Trump pledged to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.
"What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers," said Trump. "We have a lot of these people. Probably two million; it could be even three million. We are getting them out of our country."
Some researchers questioned Trump's 2-3 million figure. Still, there's an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country.
Students worry Trump's immigration policy will soon target their families.
"He's trying to separate us from our families," said Arise High School student Martha Placentia
"I am here because I feel like we are our parent's voices, said Fatima Rodriguez, another Arise High School student. "We are saying things they can't say or are afraid of saying."
KPIX 5 asked students: could eventually give Trump a chance?
"I would give him a chance if he would give us a chance," said Placentia. "But he's not giving us a chance. He's basically saying 'All you guys are criminals.'''
"Let's give him a chance. Let's see what he does," said Rodriguez. "And if we don't like it, let's do our protest again."
Meanwhile, students at two Marin County high schools left school Monday for a peaceful protect against the election of Donald Trump as president.
One hundred students, some with signs, left Redwood High School in Larkspur at 1:30 p.m. and walked down Doherty Drive to Magnolia Avenue and Larkspur City Hall, Central Marin Police Authority spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher said.
The students paused before walking back to the school on the sidewalk and obeyed all traffic signals, Rohrbacher said.
A similar number of students from Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo walked on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard to Saunders Avenue and stopped and lined the sidewalks, Rohrbacher said.
Some students had signs and occasionally chanted 'Love Trumps Hate.' The students dispersed in time for the school's 3:20 p.m. dismissal, Rohrbacher said.
Police said both demonstrations were peaceful and the teens safely exercised their constitutional right to protest.
