1 dead in Oakland shooting involving Brinks armored truck

OAKLAND -- A shooting in East Oakland during an attempted robbery of a Brinks armored truck left one person dead and two others injured Friday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened in the area of 44th Ave. and International Blvd. in the parking lot of a Napa Auto Parts store. Video from Chopper 5 showed a body covered by a yellow tarp next to the Brinks truck.

KCBS Radio reporter Alice Wertz tweeted the shooting involved an exchange of gunfire between Brinks employees and assailants.

Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said at a briefing Friday that officers were called to the scene shortly before 2 p.m. When police arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds.

Firefighters and an ambulance crew responded, but one person died at the scene. Police did not say whether the person was a suspect or a Brinks employee.

The second person, who Armstrong identified as a Brinks employee, was transported to the hospital and was in stable condition as of Friday afternoon. Meanwhile, a bystander who was struck by gunfire arrived at the hospital separately.

"This is a terrible situation that happened and unfolded in broad daylight," Armstrong said.

The chief said that investigators believe that robbery was a motive in the shooting. Police, along with the FBI, are investigating.

As for suspects, Armstrong said they are searching for a white vehicle occupied by "several individuals." Additional information about potential suspects was not immediately available.

Friday's shooting, the city's 92nd homicide of the year, was the latest in a violent week in Oakland streets with multiple deadly shootings.

"It's been a tough week in the City of Oakland," Armstrong said. "We ask the community to continue to bring forth information to help solve these crimes. We are also asking the community to continue to help get rid of the guns that continue to plague our community.

A Brinks spokesperson told KPIX 5, 'We can confirm there was an incident involving a Brink's crew and we are working with law enforcement. At this time, we don't have any further information to share.'

At least five people have been killed in violence in Oakland this week, according to police and the California Highway Patrol. One of those deaths was a shooting on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland.

Friday afternoon's killing was Oakland's 92nd homicide of 2022.
