Arrest In Killing, Sexual Assault Of 86-Year-Old Sacramento-Area Woman

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS SF/AP) – Authorities have arrested an 18-year-old man accused in the death of an 86-year-old Sacramento-area woman who was sexually assaulted and beaten during a morning walk.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull on Friday identified the suspect arrested as Neven Glen Butler.

He became a suspect in the Wednesday slaying of 86-year-old Fusako Petrus at a high school in North Highlands after his arrest in a separate attack on another elderly woman in Sacramento later that same day.

Petrus had been exercising on the school's athletic track with a 61-year-old friend when she was attacked. Turnbull says Petrus was killed after she tried to help her friend who was the initial target of the attack and was also sexually assaulted.

Butler was arrested after he allegedly attacked a 92-year-old woman along a Sacramento street. The woman was injured and was taken to the hospital, while Butler was arrested at the scene.

Turnbull said homicide detectives tied Butler to the scene of the earlier attacks at the high school.

Butler was originally booked on felony assault and elder abuse charges for the later incident. A charge of murder was added to Butler's booking after he was connected to the murder of Petrus, police said.

Butler was not eligible for bail.
