Next Google Glass Reportedly Being Built From Scratch After Numerous Problems With First Device
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) – After pulling Google Glass from the market, the Mountain View-based tech giant is reportedly working on a brand-new version of the wearable computer from the ground up.
People with knowledge of Google's plans told the New York Times that the new wearable computer would not be released until it was complete. The project is currently being overseen by jewelry designer Ivy Ross and Tony Fadell, a former Apple executive who helped create the Nest thermostat.
"There will be no public experimentation," an unnamed advisor to Fadell told the Times.
The details come as the Times reported on mistakes that Google made during the failed launch of Glass. Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly argued for the device's release, even when engineers said the project was still a prototype with many kinks that needed to be worked out.
After Google Glass was unveiled, reviewers complained about the computer's bugs and battery life. There was also backlash over the device, with many establishments banning Google Glass over privacy concerns.
Some users also reported being harassed, including a San Francisco woman who wore the device in a bar last year and a journalist who wore Google Glass in the Mission District.
Amid the backlash, Google released a guide, telling Glass users not to be rude or a "glasshole."
The company stopped sales of the wearable computer on January 19th.
