NASA Releases Stunning 'Global Selfie' Taken On Earth Day

(CBS) - On April 22^nd, NASA asked people around the globe to snap a photo of their location on the planet at that moment. On Thursday, they released the results of that world-wide photo hunt, a mosaic selfie of our planet as seen from space:

The group sent out a request for photos with the #GlobalSelfie on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Google+ and Flicker, they received photos from people on every continent and in 113 countries "From Antarctica to Yemen, Greenland to Guatemala, Micronesia to the Maldives, Pakistan, Poland, Peru – and on," NASA said in a release.

They stitched 36,422 of those photos into a 3.2 megapixel interactive, zoomable image of mother earth made op of those smaller snapshots.

The large images is based on a view of earth taken on Earth Day by satellite.

The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory also released a YouTube video highlighting some of the far-flung snapshots.
